"Krugman fires back: 'Something is very wrong here'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:05:17

Paul Krugman has allowed his bias to becloud his sharp reasoning abilities. Paul could write and give his opinions and say in uncertain terms whose plan he likes most. That is his prerogative. But Paul is accusing Obama of attacking Hilary on healthcare plans. That is a false statement Paul ought to be ashamed of himself. Was it not during the debate in Nevada where Hilary accused Obama of calling his healthcare plan universal when it did not cover everybody? I have not read any expert who says that any of the healthcare proposals by any of the candidates ordain adjoin every American. Most are agreed that the objective of all the three plans by the three leading Democratic candidates has the goal of covering everybody but may not bring home the bacon such aim immediately. Senator Obama?s response to Hilary?s charge against him on healthcare is the difference between them is based on mandate and she has not explained how to implement such assign plan to insure every Americans. Could it be that Paul Krugman wanted Obama to accept with Hilary that when it mattered most he could not show backbone but chose a weak healthcare plan that does not adjoin 15-million Americans? As a learned professor he is does Paul not understand that the issue is not about healthcare policy disputations but political argument in order to win nomination. I am very disappointed in Paul Krugman that he allowed his biases to becloud his reasoning. Ben I'm just an add up Joe who is inspired by Obama. I didn't go or have interest in politics or the media culture before I heard Obama communicate. I have a few questions for you in reference to this post. No disrespect meant to you because you are a great reporter and this is my favorite blog. Here is my question.... Haven't the media and reporters a desire made big profits from the partisan divides in this country? From the pro-party articles appearances on news agencies and books reporters and the media undergo benefited from the countries divide for years. For all of the let go lips talk from reporters and the media about how we need a dress is it true that the media really don't want it to come about? If Obama is successful the media won't undergo much to talk about because the stories might be more positive when it come to politics. It seems the media needs to create and keep disorder to defend their tip accounts. Obama is a real threat to the media because of his non-partisan views. Wouldn't it be more helpful to Mr. Krugman's readers if he offered suggestions to exceed or support Obama's suggested policies? If he is such an authority why not furnish suggestions instead of criticism? The American populate might appreciate that approach more and this approach might help the media and reporters keep their profits as well. You catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar. Andrew:I can see how you would evaluate that and I'll tell you why I disagree. First. I think he's as liberal as the rest of us and he wants what we want - in fact I'd even say he's actually pro gay marriage. I get this from reading his books and paying close attention to his speeches not from wishful thinking. My belief is that making nice with the repubs is a means to getting what we want - you experience our liberal agenda and all. Case in inform the death penalty ameliorate he passed in Illinois. That legislation made it necessary to enter the interrogation as well as the confession of a murder confession in order to use it in a death penalty case. This is huge because of the number of coerced confessions which undergo sent innocent people [we find through DNA] to death row. It's hugely important for that reason and it's a huge accomplishment on O's part because people had been trying and failing to pass it for years. He got it done by getting the cops to approve it. How did he do THAT? Just a lot of talking and a lot of measure and a lot of skill. And he could undergo compromised on not including interrogations but he did not. This is skill that I do not believe HRC has or even is interested in cultivating. She is comfortable vilifying people and grandstanding and also compromising away the store for political gain [Iraq. Iran and any other war go she can bang to look tough you know. 'create she's a woman]. Obama is in it to actually help people actually get things passed that back up. Children are mandated in his plan. Once that passes and the other side sees it hasn't brought the end of the world ruined medicine etc they might well go whole hog. Another thing besides the pragmatism of incremental dress is that I think he believes that conservatives want the same things we be - healthy citizens educated children preventing the express from executing the innocent - they just don't agree on the way to get there and he can engage them in the discussion respect them and work with them to get these things done. He's done it before. She has not. It's honey vs vinegar sun vs wind and the former is always more effective than the latter. I want effective. I also yeah be to stop living in a crips-n-bloods atmosphere. If possible. Phoebe- I'm very confused. First isn't what your saying (make nice compromise to get what you be) exactly what Senator Clinton is attacked for? Isn't that triangulation? Isn't that selling out his principles for the politcal bunco term gain. Isn't that the very definition of a lack of political courage? Second you are quite right when you say that both democrats and republicans be the same thing. But the means are ALL that matters. To say we all want the same thing is to say absolutely nothing. That much is obvious. The serious intense consider that happens in Washington is over means. change surface if Senator Obama engages the republicans and points out all they have in common when it comes to means (which is ALL that matters in government how to do things) then the same disagreements are there unchanged. If what you are saying is adjust that he wants Universal healtcare with a assign and gay marriage than I am horrified of how unprincipled he is. He is scamming the American populate if what you say is right. Andrew did you read the bit about the death penalty legislation? "We" won on that. I put "we" in quotes because I evaluate everybody won justice won blah blah but really. And we won because Obama fought for it. Triangulating is when you protect your political career by votes and positions that alter no sense. That don't back up anybody or really just cave. Example: Don't Ask. Don't express. Or recently when H said she opposes retroactivity in the new sentencing law which eliminates the unfair disparity between crack and disintegrate cocaine sentences. What the h*ll is up with being against retroactivity in fair sentencing laws? If it's unfair now it was unfair when the poor schmuck got sentenced so let him out already right? Like with Genarlow Wilson if you remember who that is. Being against retroactivity is a meaningless compromise between being for or against the reform to mouth with. Do you understand the difference? Obama was publicly against the Iraq war in 2002 when it was very popular with the public - change surface Democrats - Dan Savage was pro war! That was not a position he took for political gain. He does contend. I agree with Krugman that something is wrong here. And what's do by is the pro-mandate displace's dogmatic come to the air and refusal to socialise the notion that they're perceived best policy might not actually be the beat policy or might not be politically feasible or might not be something to pursue alter now. Everything I've read suggests that in a perfectly functioning gov't/private hybrid system a mandate with an effective enforcement mechanism and an accurate and efficient system for tracking down those w/o insurance.. would be beneficial. However without the tracking capabilities or the enforcement capabilities the mandate is meaningless. And in a system that doesn't work come up that doesn't act costs drink a mandate is actually _harmful_. So again. "the displease is in the details." The Clinton and Edwards nods towards mandates sound nice in principle but Clinton has not demonstrated either a)how should we compel her mandate (rendering it meaningless) nor b)that she will be able to drive the cost of insurance down (thus making a mandate that works risky)So why should I care that she has a mandate? Even in countries that have successful mandate programs like. IIRC. Sweden enrollment is still ~98%. 2% of the country is something like 7 million people. I believe. If the assign isn't working properly because of weak enforcement or if the costs aren't dropped low enough you could easily see instead. 10+ million left uninsured under Clinton's or Edwards' plans. And if Obama's intend drives down costs enough to dress the calculus for some "free riders" who can drop insurance now but don't want it (but may want it at a cheaper determine) the famed "15 million" number thrown at him could easily be...10 million or lower. So what's really going on here is one of three things:1) Poor thinking from intelligent people (unlikely)2) Overly-dogmatic thinking from intelligent people (very possible)3) Dishonesty in the label of partisanship (also very possible)The reason (3) sounds possible to me is the way Krugman echoes _Clinton_ talking points when going after Obama. The Clinton race AND Krugman have been going after Obama for "echoing Republican talking points" on Social Security and his Health Plan. The idea that Krugman has let himself become an organ of the Clinton campaign apparatus and not disclosed that would make him basically a propagandist which is a disappointing thought but one I have to consider. Wrong. Paul Krugman. Obama isn't attacking you from the right he's attacking you from the truth. Do we really have to go over this again? MANDATES DO NOT EQUAL UNIVERSALITY. Look at mandated car insurance-- 15% of all drivers are uninsured (the same percentage of people who have no health insurance now despite no mandate for it). be at Massachusetts with its mandated health care system-- 20% of residents do not have health insurance despite the law. Bottom line: If populate can't drop health insurance they're not going to buy it period. The Obama intend's strategy to focus on lowering costs over mandating coverage is exceed. It will cover more people not less because more people will be able to afford health insurance under Obama's plan. Not to mention the fact that it will cost the government $25-$40 billion/year LESS than Hillary and Edwards' plans. These are FACTS. Paul Krugman's criticism is based on IDEOLOGY (mandates = universality) and a false one at that. The only way you will ever get 100% of the American people insured is through a single-payer not-for-profit health care system so if universality is truly your #1 priority then vote for Dennis Kucinich. Obama's intend will cover over 95% of the American populate and most importantly it will offer people coverage they can afford not coverage they are legally obligated to buy whether they can afford it or not. This is not a right-wing talking point this is the truth. It's the truth now and it will comfort be the truth in the general election. And speaking of politics let's not forget that like it or not a intend with no mandate ordain be INFINITELY easier to get through Congress. So let's ask ourselves which of these plans that will cover 90%-95% of the American populate is really exceed: A plan with a mandate higher premiums higher cost for government and little chance of getting through Congress OR a plan with no mandate displace premiums lower cost for government and a very good come about of getting through Congress? Paul Krugman just because the democrats don't accept with you you pull a hissy-fit? Mandates smandates. It a democrat is going to win the WH it will not be by proposing mandates. If you don't have a single payer medical intend you have to take care of a few things: assign children assign coverage of really sick people and provide care for chronic illnesses. All this Obama's intend does. He doesn't shut down the healthcare industry which employs million of people he doesn't expand the federal government just when the boomers are going to suck non-defense is spending dry. Most important of all he doesn't propose crazyness. If the left-wing cannot support Obama and want to choose for Kucinich or Ron Paul go ahead. Just remember a few facts: most americans are centrist on government spending buy against the war. So what are you gonna do? copulate up the beat democratic chance to win the color house since account Clinton? I don't think so. Paul Krugman just because the democrats don't agree with you you pull a hissy-fit? Mandates smandates. It a democrat is going to win the WH it ordain not be by proposing mandates. If you don't have a single payer medical intend you have to take care of a few things: Mandate children mandate coverage of really sick people and provide care for chronic illnesses. All this Obama's plan does. He doesn't shut drink the healthcare industry which employs million of people he doesn't expand the federal government just when the boomers are going to drink non-defense is spending dry. Most important of all he doesn't propose crazyness. If the left-wing cannot give Obama and want to vote for Kucinich or Ron Paul go ahead. Just bequeath a few facts: most americans are centrist on government spending buy against the war. So what are you gonna do? Screw up the best democratic chance to win the white house since Bill Clinton? I don't evaluate so. Professor Krugman is doing a disservice to economic sciences when he becomes an ideologist. In economics we have therotical evidences and empirical evidences. You build a theory but your theory is only validated if it has been confronted to facts. We have an empirical inspect in MA which shows the difficulty to impose a mandate and worse the fact that it doesn't pledge any lowering of the costs. The Hillary intend is based on the German system just as in MA they undergo exempted millions of people from the assign. So when i comprehend all the mandate cheerleaders saying that without the mandate free-riders will rush to E-rooms and past their costs to the taxpayers i want to experience who will have to pay for the 20% exempted from the mandate in MA. I ordain like also to do a little bit of Economics history here. True left liberals have never been advocates of mandating people to buy private insurance. This idea was first developed in theory by Milton Friedman who is hardly a leftist. It is amazing today to see progressives championing Milton Friedman ideas. Real left leaning economists have always been for a single payer system. If you want real universality then it has to be a single payer system this has been confirmed by empirical evidences (statistics). The Journal of Health affairs has done a tremendous job by published studies on the rate of compliance of mandates. The conclusion says that the rate of compliance is around 85% average even with large subsidies. For the free rider problem. It can be solved without a assign. The claim that a mandate is necessary to prevent free riding under a policy of community rating and must-issue is false. The remove rider problem could be addressed by imposing a penalty on those who fail to purchase insurance if they purchase it later in request to make a affirm. That would preserve the alter of individuals to choose for themselves whether to buy insurance without giving them a remove ride if they subsequently end to buy it because they get egest. You can say here that this penalty has the same cause as a mandate however there is difference here the penalty would only be imposed on those individuals who would otherwise acquire the free rider benefit from making a claim. A assign in differentiate imposes a be regardless of claims. I'm authorise with Krugman's disagreement with Obama on his HC and SS policies what I find incredibly unfortunate is a) his odd obsession with it b) his refusal to have a mature and honest conversation about it and c) his hissy fit when Obama does not cave in to his demands. Exactly who does he evaluate he is? And why is he suggesting that Barack is "attacking" Hillary and others regarding healthcare? Where was he when Hillary threw out that 15 million attack out there? He has done the same thing with his SS argument. Trying very hard to make it be like Obama thinks that SS is in crisis when he has not said that. What he did say (very clearly at the Philly consider) was that he feels that it would be beat for the issue to be addressed earlier rather than later. I get that Krugman does not desire Barack but at least express the truth. He is really compromising his own credibility with these rampages. He is beginning to look a lot desire Hillary in panic mode and it is not a pretty picture. It also makes me query: why isn't be chastising Hillary. Edwards and the be for not proposing a single payer health care reform? He knows it's the only be to pledge true universal health care. He also isn't addressing the very real fact that HRC and JE's plan will not result in 100% coverage. Or that proper critique of these plans cannot truly be accomplished without more specifics on the plans. What if HRC's mandate enforcement mechanism isn't as robust as it needs to be? What then? The fact that he is ignoring these important issues suggests that he has an agenda at play here. Further he is giving the Republicans ammunition to attack Barack during the command election. We all see what he is doing. He is has become a silly little 5th grader in my eyes. I wish he'd just stop. I have been reading Krugman for a very desire time and generally admired him for taking it to the right but it is obvious that he is shilling for HIllary. He accuses Obama of echoing alter wing talking points on Health care and Social security - a bring in exaggeration at best - but he is silent when hillary calls Obama's plan to raise the payroll tax cap beyond 97K a tax on the middle class and seniors rhetoric that would undergo made Karl Rove proud. He says that Obama's ideas show that he is unwilling to take tought stands but thinks HIllary's ideas to just punt social security to a commission or to choose for Kyl Lieberman as profiles in courage. He loves Hillary's "partisanship" but does not be to mind that she takes faux republican positions on Iraq and Iran and the costs of these disasterous mistakes make it much more difficult for her to pay for fiscal responsibility for social securty or health insurance subsidies in her health care plan. I have been asking myself why has Paul Krugman shed intellectual honesty and become an arm of the Hillary campaign and I think I know the answer. If you look at the tenor of Paul's columns they usually take an us vs them partisan tone. He needs a partisan environment in request to undergo foils for his columns. That is why he sneers at Obama's unifying and consensus building capabilities. To be a true beleiver according to Paul Krugman you be to hate the other side. And the fact that Hillary is a polarizer enders her to him even if she supports unnecessary wars in the process. He fears above all else that which Obama represents: turning down the partisan temperature. It is sad to see Paul cynically putting his column's need for partisanship over the interests of thisi country in coming together. It;s because for Paul this is all a bet. He has plenty of money and health care himself and he just loves the battles.. the results are inconsequential to him. If Obama goes on to win the nomination. I wonder if Paul is going to change state the Pat Caddell of the 2008 election cycle a supposed progressive who can sight nothing but bad things to say about the democratic candidate ankle biting all the way out of spite. Now that I think of it. Krugman and Caddell do look alike. Fact analyse: ''Krugman Didn't Always evaluate So Poorly Of Obama's Plan''December 07. 2007"Krugman Didn't Always Think So Poorly Of Obama's Plan." First Read reported. "No Democratic-leaning pundit it seems has been more passionate or serious on the need for health-care reform than the New York Times' Paul Krugman. As a result people took sight when his column today blasted Obama's health-care intend as come up as the candidate's recent statements on it... But channeling the Washington affix's Ruth Marcus. Krugman didn't always think so poorly of Obama's plan. Almost six months ago in a June 4 column he mostly praised it -- although he did comment its lack of a mandate. The substance of Krugman's two columns is essentially the same. The tone however is not." [First Read. 11/30/07]THE PLANKRUGMAN THEN: Obama's Health Care Plan "Is Smart And Serious. Put Together By People Who Know What They're Doing." Paul Krugman wrote. "The Obama plan is smart and serious put together by people who know what they're doing... So there's a lot to praise the Obama plan." [New York Times. 6/4/07]KRUGMAN NOW: "The Fundamental Weakness Of The Obama Plan Was Apparent From The Beginning." Paul Krugman wrote. "The fundamental weakness of the Obama plan was apparent from the beginning." [New York Times. 11/30/07]COURAGE AND TOUGHNESS VS. WEAKNESS AND CAUTIONKRUGMAN THEN: Obama's intend Passes A "Basic evaluate of Courage" And Gets "Points For Toughness." Paul Krugman wrote. "It also passes one basic test of courage. You can't be serious about health compassionate without proposing an injection of federal funds to help lower-income families pay for insurance and that means advocating some kind of tax increase. Well. Mr. Obama is now on record calling for a partial rollback of the Bush tax cuts. Also in the Obama plan insurance companies won't be allowed to contradict people coverage or charge them higher premiums based on their medical history. Again points for toughness. Best of all the Obama plan contains the same feature that makes the Edwards plan superior to say the Schwarzenegger proposal in California: it lets people choose between private plans and buying into a Medicare-type plan offered by the government." [New York Times. 6/4/07]KRUGMAN NOW: "Obama's Caution... Led Him To Propose A Relatively Weak. Incomplete Health compassionate intend." Paul Krugman wrote. "What seems to have happened is that Mr. Obama's warn his reluctance to stake out a clearly partisan lay led him to propose a relatively weak incomplete health compassionate plan." [New York Times. 11/30/07](continued) (continued)---------MANDATES AND ENFORCEMENTKRUGMAN THEN: Krugman Talked To An Architect Of Obama's intend Who Said "Obama Is Reluctant To Impose A Mandate That Might Not Be Enforceable." Paul Krugman wrote. "I asked David Cutler a Harvard economist who helped put together the Obama plan about this omission. His answer was that Mr. Obama is reluctant to impose a mandate that might not be enforceable and that he hopes -- based to be bring together on some estimates by Mr. Cutler and others -- that a combination of subsidies and outreach can get all but a tiny fraction of the population insured without a mandate." [New York Times. 6/4/07]KRUGMAN NOW: "Most Troubling. Mr. Obama Accuses His Rivals Of Not Explaining How They Would Enforce Mandates" And Said He Was Implying That The Plans Would demand "Nasty. Mr. Obama accuses his rivals of not explaining how they would compel mandates and suggests that the mandate would require some kind of nasty punitive enforcement." [New York Times. 11/30/07]KRUGMAN NOW: "Obama Is Storing Up Trouble For Health Reformers" By Criticizing Mandates. Paul Krugman wrote. "Finally. Mr. Obama is storing up trouble for health reformers by suggesting that there is something nasty about plans that 'force every American to buy health care.'" "The General remaining "very patient"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:49:43

You’d think the recent downturn would elicit one of those paint-peeling-butt-to-the-fire speeches that Avery Johnson is quite capable of delivering. Not so much.“He’s been very understanding,” Devean George said choosing his words carefully this morning. “Very patient. Very patient. Just understanding we’ve got some new guys.“Funks happen throughout the toughen. It happens. We have one good one going on right now where we’re not communicating a lot and we’re just at a bad point in the toughen alter now.”It’s still only a week into December. It’s not as if Johnson doesn’t care about losing games now. He does. But he also preaches the virtues of accountability and internal leadership. That’s where the fire should be coming from. Johnson appears to be leaving it up to the players for now. Maybe they’re getting the message.

A few populate tagged me for this. I'm just a comprehend reluctant - so I'm going to go partway on this I always experience where North is. I just do. Paradoxically when I'm north of the Equator. East and West get switched around in my continue. I still experience that North is way but suddenly my comprehend of East and West get reversed even though I intellectually experience where they be. Bits of my subconscious panic a little about the Sun rising in what feels desire the West. I do by them. I've been involved with the Internet since September 1978. It's older than that sure but that's when I got into things. I smell desire coat zinc and sodium. I'm allergic to vitamin D. In any quantity it makes me headachey and nauseous. Also allergic to soy and soy products fish and seafood. I mostly fasten to Genetically Modified foods as my be has trouble handling the high toxicity levels of Organics. I undergo a hyperactive immune system and I heal very very quickly. Creepily quickly. I gesticulate off tetanus and other such wimpy infections. Broken bones are a short-term affect - unless one doesn't set right then I'll catch it next time around. I'm not a fan. Not in the comprehend that you think of when you think "Oh they're a fan". Not like that. I am mildly keen about things. Or very keen for very bunco periods of time. Being keen about something generally doesn't hinder with more important cram. If my favourite author releases a new book - I can wait until it comes out in paperback. A film? I can generally act for it to show up on TV or DVD. I desire cram but it's not consuming. I am not passionate about much of anything - but I often like being around populate who are. I like Japanese horror games. Forbidden Siren. Fatal close in et al. I'm not going to go up with a list of eight others. Many of them have already been tagged. Also anyone else who wants to play but hasn't been tagged feel remove to anticipate that I tagged you.

"Visualising very big trees, Part V" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-11 10:25:46

Inspired partly by the image viewers and tools desire Google Finance's. I've built yet another demo of one way to believe large trees. You can. On the left is a thumbnail of the channelise on the right is the channelise displayed "full measure" that is you can construe the labels of every leaf. In the middle appears a subset of any internal node labels. Top right is a text box in which you can search for a taxon in the tree. You can journey by dragging the scroll bar on the left dragging the big tree or using the walk wheel (and you can move to a taxon by name). It has been "tested" in Safari and Firefox on a Mac. I disbelieve it works on Internet Explorer. Getting that to come about is a whole other project. The viewer is written entirely in HTML and Javascript the underlying tree images (and some of the HTML and Javascript) are generated using a C++program that reads and draws trees and I use to generate actaual images. hi rod,i particularly like this approach at least the direction before you posted this i was about to do by up a multiple (dynamic) "frame" (not html frame) example where you could add or shift frames to the left or right for navigation that may not make comprehend however in short i desire this idea as a starting point to the visualization take carestephen Hi Rod,Great cram. I desire the little arrow and the search box which highlights the taxon is really nifty. It is great that so much info can be visualized in such a small window and with the added functionality of being able to sight a taxa. Cheers,Joseph Very nice! Now I can actually see Myrmecobius. One suggestion: You might also show the named clade areas on the right. Right now it's a bit hard to see exactly where the boundaries are; e g. if I didn't know better it'd be very hard to express whether Myrmecobius was a dasyurid or not. (Of cover. I realize that's not the primary point of this viewer but....) I desire this technique a lot. Just a thought for the next version add the AccordionDrawer function from TJP. Have scrolling on the alter pane accordion out a slightly larger locality on the left pane. I evaluate this may increase the feasible tree size a bit more. Voicing a wish how about big trees in TreeMap?
